German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT)

The German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT) in Ulaanbaatar is identified as one of the fastest developing and inspirational places of knowledge and intellectual wealth in Mongolia. It was established on the basis of an agreement between the governments of Germany and Mongolia in 2011, aiming to transfer the German engineering and technical know-how to Mongolia. GMIT has the objective to promote scientific teaching and research in the mining sector and the environmental sector, which are utterly important for the future of Mongolia. The research spirit in GMIT is guided by interdisciplinary applied approach.

GMIT started its activity as public (state-owned) university with Bachelor and Master's study programs in 2013, committed to providing high quality education, research and social service to its students and partners, alike. In 2018, the first Bachelor students of the Institute graduated, and an agreement was concluded with the German development bank KfW for extension of the Campus.

To date, over 50 organizations such as private sector, government, and NGO’s have concluded memorandums of understanding and cooperation agreements with GMIT, including the representation of RELO in Mongolia. GMIT also has a close cooperation with six German universities and the support of Mongolian and German ministries and scientific organizations.

“At GMIT, we envision the future where industries, from extraction of minerals to manufacturing of goods to logistics, are guided by advancement of technologies such as autonomous systems and big data mining. Our faculty members and students, together with international colleagues, aspire to integrate/balance the different facets of development to ensure the sustainable development in local and as well as global context.”, says the Rector D-r Dorjderem Nyamjav, Ph.D.

Wardell Armstrong

The multidisciplinary Engineering, Environmental and Mining consultancy - Wardell Armstrong operates in the UK and worldwide with over 180 years of international experience. Wardell works in the development of natural mineral and energy resources, land and property, waste resource management, environmental and social management and infrastructure. Some of their key service areas are in mining and minerals, ground engineering, waste resource management, environment and planning and more.

Traditionally, Wardell provides a range of standard comminution tests including JK Drop Weight, SAGDesign and Bond Index testing to fully quantify grinding energy requirements at all levels from initial scoping through to a full definitive feasibility study.

“The energy used during the crushing and grinding of an ore accounts for one of the most significant costs within any mining operation. It is therefore critical that the energy requirements in terms of ore hardness are fully understood, even at an early stage during project development and used to optimise the comminution design.” Recognizing this key importance, Wardell is keen to get to know and work closely with the energy efficient grinding bodies RELO, addressing precisely this challenge in mining.

“Operating from one of our Mineral Processing plants – the one based in Cornwall, United Kingdom, our team of metallurgists, mineralogists and analytical chemists with extensive experience in the testing of a wide range of ores and commodities from across the world have the capabilities to test samples ranging in size for initial bench scale scoping studies, methodologies development and pilot plant campaigns.”
